19th Century Saxon Faschinenmesser – Metz Fortress Unit Marked

Original 19th-century German Faschinenmesser, or infantry sidearm, associated with Saxon service and carrying period Metz fortress unit markings (12.A.F.3.93) across both the hilt its matching scabbard. 

Scabbard is stable and solid, with no flex. 

These substantial short swords were issued for both field use and as practical sidearms, with the heavy blade suited to cutting duties as well as military wear. This example has a pleasing untouched appearance, with age-related patina and service wear throughout.

The period unit markings add considerably to its interest and give the piece a strong historical character beyond that of an unmarked example. Worthy of further research. 

Condition: Good original antique condition with wear, staining, patina and surface oxidation consistent with age and service use. Some localized stabilised pitting in areas of the blade.
