Georgian Flanking / Flank Officer’s Sabre – Blue & Gilt Blade – c.1790s–Early 1803s

Original Georgian flank officer’s sabre, dating to the late 18th / very early 19th century and of the type associated with British light infantry and grenadier officers during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period.

The curved blade retains foliate blue and gilt decoration, with the typical proportions of an officer-purchased fighting sabre rather than a regulation rank-and-file weapon. The blade remains notably sharp (very sharp) and shows distinct historic edge notching, suggestive of genuine hard service use. Though this is of course speculation. 

Complete with its original leather scabbard, supporting the overall appearance expected of a privately purchased Georgian officer’s sidearm. Interestingly elements of the brass-work on the scabbard show evidence of japanning, essentially an intentional blackening of the brass, used to prevent glint in theatre. Again supporting combat use. 

Original length blade at 70cm, intentionally shorter than regular period sabres, suggestive of flank use. 

A strong early British military sword with genuine Napoleonic-era presence, particularly appealing to collectors of Georgian and pre-1803 edged weapons.

Original antique condition with age-related wear, patina, oxidation and historic marks throughout. The leather scabbard has age-related wear and repairs (internal) consistent with its age. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
