WW1 Royal Engineers Officer’s Sword – Lt Col Edward Thompson OBE, Later LNER Chief Mechanical Engineer

Original British 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer’s Sword, attributed to Lieutenant Colonel Edward Thompson OBE, Royal Engineers, with the blade etched “Lt Col E Thompson OBE.”

Thompson served with the Royal Engineers during the First World War, including service on the Western Front, and later became a major figure in British railway engineering. He went on to serve as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) during the Second World War. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and later in 1919 was awarded the military O.B.E. His most notable war-time service was during the Battle of Passchendaele, for which he was above commended.

The sword features the regulation George V cypher guard, etched blade and Thompson’s name and rank prominently engraved to the blade, giving the piece unusually strong and readily identifiable provenance.

A particularly interesting named officer’s sword combining First World War Royal Engineers history with genuinely important British railway heritage.
