French M1777 Musket – Prussian Capture & Conversion – Napoleonic Era Military Firearm

Original French Model 1777 military musket, subsequently taken into Prussian service and converted/altered for continued military use.

This is a particularly atmospheric survivor from the Napoleonic/post Napoleonic period. This is a French M1777-pattern form with later Prussian military adaptation, unit marked to 10IR. 3c. 82 - in other words 10th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Company weapon 82. The piece shows the sort of cross-national service history often seen in arms captured, reissued and modified during the long European wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, though it requires further research to ascertain its exact history. 

Substantial restamping on components, I believe likely done when percussion converted and perhaps serialised. 

Iron work is overall quite good for the age. Interestingly, the barrel appears to be either shortened (known to happen on Prussian issues French weapons), or is factory shorter. It is closer to a 'dragoon' length than a standard Charleville pattern musket. 

The musket retains its substantial military stock, also stamped JR (infantry regiment), iron furniture and period lockwork, with surviving French manufacture/arsenal character consistent with the De Tulle proudction. The percussion conversion appears to be Germanic, likely Prussian, plausibly done as the weapon was likely retained in service for decades. 

Overall strong display piece for a collection of Napoleonic arms, French military firearms, Prussian militaria or early European service weapons. Worthy of further research.

Condition: Original antique condition with substantial age-related wear, marks, patina and evidence of service. The strong requires a 'Dutchman' repair towards the barrel end. The barrel bands sit rather loosely on the wood likely due to shrinkage, though it is repairable. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
