Victorian Royal Navy Officer’s Sword – Surgeon William Godfrey Peck RN

Original Victorian Royal Navy officer’s sword associated with Surgeon William Godfrey Peck, Royal Navy, with strong late-19th-century service provenance in the form of a period engraving. 

Peck served as a naval surgeon and was present during operations connected with the intervention in Crete in 1898, including the British presence at Canea. He is noticed in contemporary accounts as having been part of the landing party, wherein he tended to wounded and managed an outbreak of Smallpox. 

He died later that same year, at a young age, from enteric fever whilst serving aboard HMS Anson in Malta, making this a particularly poignant surviving piece connected to a short but active naval career.

The sword is of the traditional 1827 Pattern Royal Navy form, with gilt brass hilt, fouled-anchor naval decoration and lion-head pommel. The blade has been period service sharpened.

A very appealing named/provenanced Royal Navy sword with a direct link to the Mediterranean operations of 1898.

Certainly worthy of further research.

Condition: Good original antique condition with age-related wear, marks, patina and surface oxidation throughout. The blade has been service sharpened and shows honest period wear. Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
